Imagine living for 17 years under a personal vow of silence. Our first guest, National Geographic author John Francis, did just that. After witnessing the devastating effects of the 1971 oil spill in San Francisco Bay, John embarked on a period of reflection that involved a 17 year long self-imposed silence and 22 years of walking. John’s incredible journey is chronicled in his book The Ragged Edge of Silence: Finding Peace in a Noisy World. Then, you will hear the extraordinary story of a self-made man from Norway, Geir Ness, and how he is leaving positive footprints through his multi-million dollar Laila Perfume Company. During our interview with Geir we spoke about his dear friend, 9-time New York City Marathon Champion Grete Weitz, with whom he joined forces to raise money for cancer research. We learned that Geir substituted for Grete in the 2009 NYC Marathon and raised nearly 0000 for the Norway Cancer Society. Sadly, Grete recently lost her courageous battle with cancer so we dedicate this show in Grete’s memory and to everyone whose lives have been affected by cancer …

Breakfast at a Tripoli hotel housing international journalists took a decidedly grim turn Saturday when a desperate Libyan woman burst into the building frantic to let the world know she had been raped and beaten by Moammar Gadhafi’s militia. Her face was heavily bruised. So were her legs. She displayed blood on her right inner thigh. She said her name was Eman al-Obeidy. She was well-dressed and appeared to be a well-to-do middle-aged woman. She spoke in English and said she was from the rebel stronghold of Benghazi and had been picked up by Gadhafi’s men at a checkpoint east of Tripoli. She sobbed and said she was held against her will for two days and raped by 15 men. “Look at what Gadhafi’s brigades did to me,” she said. “My honor was violated by them.” She showed the journalists how she had been tied at her wrists and ankles. She had visible rope burns. “We are all Libyans,” the woman said. “Why don’t you treat us the same?” CNN could not independently verify al-Obeidy’s story but her injuries appeared consistent with what she said. Government officials quickly closed in to stifle her. But she persisted, wanting the journalists, staying at the Rixos Hotel, to see Gadhafi’s brutality firsthand. International journalists, including CNN’s staff, are not allowed to move freely in the Libyan capital and are escorted out of the hotel only on organized outings by government minders. This was the first time a Libyan opposed to Gadhafi attempted to independently approach the …

www.nma.tv News sites have pulled a story on Malia Obama’s spring break vacation in Mexico amid apparent pressure from the Obama Administration. Despite travel warnings issued by the Department of State, the 13 year old is currently taking in the sights of Oaxaca without her parents, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle. She isn’t alone; Malia has with her 25 Secret Service agents, which has drawn the ire of Internet commenters who see the entourage as excessive government spending. By all accounts, the story was originated by Agence France Presse on Monday and quickly spread to other news outlets like The Daily Telegraph, The Huffington Post and Daily Mail. However, the story began disappearing from the sites later in the day. The First Lady’s office acknowledged it had “reminded outlets” to respect Malia’s and her younger sister Sacha’s privacy, suggesting that the offending sites were influenced by the Obama Administration to pull the vacation story. Surprisingly, once news broke of a strong earthquake in Mexico, the White House confirmed Malia was in the country and wasn’t in harm’s way.

www.nma.tv A group of hackers want to launch a satellite to build their own private internet, free from government censorship. Angry with the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) now pending in Congress, the hackers announced at this Year’s Chaos Communication Congress that a spaced-based internet is just the first step of an ambitious plan to put “a hacker on the moon” in 23 years. The Hackerspace Global Grid, as the project has been dubbed, will be no east task. Launching satellites with rockets is expensive. Satellites sent up with balloons are less precisely placed and harder to keep track of. And the “hackernet” is likely to be slow because of the time it would take for the signal to travel between terrestrial computers and the satellite. The legal implications of the plan are also murky. The hackers hope their networks would be left alone because no government holds jurisdiction over outer space. But governments could disable the satellites if they want to take the network down.
